Endometriosis is one of the most common chronic health conditions affecting women with uteruses. Around 10 percent of reproductive-age women worldwide are believed to have it, which adds up to roughly 190 million people around the globe. Despite how widespread it is, scientists still struggle to understand it fully, there is no cure, and research into the condition remains far below what experts say it deserves. That gap in research and funding has real consequences for the health and lives of those affected.
At its core, endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows in places it should not, such as on the ovaries, Fallopian tubes, or the lining of the pelvis. This misplaced tissue responds to hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle, causing pain, inflammation, scar tissue, and often infertility. The symptoms range from intense menstrual pain and chronic pelvic pain to pain during sex, bowel movements, or urination. Some people also experience fatigue, nausea, or heavy bleeding.
Despite how disruptive these symptoms can be, one of the biggest challenges surrounding endometriosis is how hard it is to diagnose. Currently, the most reliable way to confirm the condition is through surgery with a camera inserted into the abdomen. While noninvasive tools such as ultrasounds or MRI can help support a diagnosis, they are often not enough on their own. This surgical requirement means many people undergo years of pain before they receive an accurate diagnosis.
The delay between the start of symptoms and diagnosis is a major issue. Studies have found that people with endometriosis often wait years before they are properly diagnosed, with some experiencing symptoms for nearly a decade before a correct diagnosis is made. This gap in recognition can lead to worsening pain, psychological strain, and serious impacts on quality of life.
Part of the reason research lags behind, even though the condition is so common, is funding. Endometriosis research receives only a tiny fraction of what other chronic diseases get. In the United States, for example, endometriosis studies made up far less than one percent of the National Institutes of Health budget in a recent year, despite affecting millions of women. Chronic under-funding means fewer large scientific studies, slower progress in understanding what causes the disease, and fewer resources to develop new treatments.
There are also scientific challenges that make studying endometriosis difficult. The disease does not behave the same way in every person. Lesions can appear in different organs, cause different symptoms, and vary in severity. There is no single blood test or biomarker that can reliably indicate endometriosis, and researchers still debate its underlying causes. These scientific complexities make it harder to design clear, large-scale studies that lead to strong evidence about best treatments or prevention.
Another layer to the problem is that health conditions that primarily or only affect women have historically received less attention and funding than conditions affecting men. This discrepancy is part of a broader pattern in medical research that has left conditions like endometriosis under-prioritised by major funding agencies and public health organisations.
The lack of research affects more than just scientists and clinicians. Those living with endometriosis often experience significant physical discomfort that can interrupt school, work, and social activities. The ongoing pain and fertility issues can also affect emotional well-being. In many cases, people report feeling dismissed by health care providers or society simply because menstrual pain is still too often normalised rather than treated as a serious medical concern.
In recent years, advocacy groups and some governments have started pushing for better research and care. Some funding increases and new programs aim to encourage more scientific investigation into endometriosis, including efforts to find reliable noninvasive diagnostic tools and more effective, personalised treatments.
Understanding endometriosis better could not only help millions of people with pain and fertility issues, but also reveal insights into how hormones, genetics, and chronic inflammation work in the body. Robust research could ultimately lead to earlier diagnosis, better treatments, and improved quality of life for those affected.
Endometriosis is not simply “bad periods” or something to be overlooked. It is a complex and real health condition that deserves attention equal to its prevalence. More funding, more scientific focus, and more public awareness could change years of delayed diagnoses and limited treatment for millions around the world.

Walk into any school cafeteria after lunch or a birthday party stacked with cupcakes and you will hear it. Someone always says sugar is about to send everyone into a frenzy. The idea that sugar makes teens and kids instantly hyperactive is everywhere, from parents’ warnings to jokes in movies. But when you look at what science actually says, the story gets more interesting.
Let’s start with what researchers have tested. For decades, scientists have run studies where kids are given sugary foods or drinks and then observed for changes in behaviour, focus, and activity levels. In many of these experiments, neither the kids nor the adults watching them know who got sugar and who did not. This is important because expectations can shape what people think they see. The surprising result is that most well controlled studies find no significant difference in hyperactivity between the sugar group and the no sugar group.
So if sugar does not directly cause hyper behaviour, why does it feel so real? Part of the answer is context. Think about when sugar usually shows up. It is at parties, holidays, sports games, and special events. These are already exciting environments. There is music, friends, movement, and a lot of energy in the room. When teens or kids act more energetic in these moments, it is easy to blame the candy or soda, even if the excitement was already there.
Another piece is how our brains react to expectations. Some studies have shown that when adults believe a child has consumed sugar, they are more likely to rate that child as hyperactive, even if the child actually had a sugar free drink. This does not mean people are lying. It just shows how powerful our assumptions can be in shaping what we notice.
That said, sugar is not completely off the hook. While it may not directly cause hyperactivity, it can still affect how you feel. Simple sugars are digested quickly, which can lead to a fast rise in blood sugar followed by a drop. For some people, that crash can bring feelings of tiredness, irritability, or trouble concentrating. This can look like restlessness or mood changes, especially in a classroom setting where sitting still and focusing is expected.
What about energy drinks and soda? These often get lumped in with sugar, but caffeine is a different story. Caffeine is a stimulant that can increase alertness, heart rate, and feelings of jitteriness. When teens feel wired after a large soda or energy drink, caffeine is often doing more of the work than the sugar itself.
So where does this leave the sugar and hyperactivity myth? The short answer is that sugar alone does not seem to cause hyper behaviour in most people. The setting, expectations, and other ingredients like caffeine play a much bigger role in how energetic someone appears.
Paying attention to how your body feels after certain foods can still be useful. Some teens notice they feel more focused when they eat balanced snacks instead of something that is purely sweet. Pairing something sugary with protein or fiber, like fruit with yogurt or peanut butter, can help slow down how fast sugar enters your bloodstream and keep your energy more steady during long school days or study sessions.
In the end, the idea of a sugar fueled frenzy makes for a catchy story, but science tells a calmer one. Your energy is shaped by sleep, stress, surroundings, and your overall routine, not just that one cookie after lunch. Understanding that gives you more control than blaming the sugar ever could.

Imagine waking up one day and feeling completely different from who you were yesterday, as if someone else lived inside your mind. In 1811, something like this happened to Mary Reynolds, a young woman living in Pennsylvania, and her experience became one of the earliest documented cases of what doctors of the time called “double consciousness.” Today, this phenomenon is most closely related to what psychologists call dissociative identity disorder, or DID, a condition involving two or more distinct ways of thinking, behaving, and remembering.
Mary was born around the late 1700s in England and moved to Pennsylvania with her family as a child. Her early years were described by later accounts as quiet and serious, a life ordinary in its routines. Then, in 1811, everything changed. After falling into a profound sleep that lasted for weeks, Mary awoke without memory of her previous everyday life and behaved in a strikingly different way. A second personality had taken over, one that seemed more outgoing, cheerful, and lively than her original self. For the next 18 years, she alternated between these two states of being, with little to no overlap in memory from one to the other.
Doctors and scientists of her era were fascinated and puzzled by her case. In 1816, Dr. Samuel Latham Mitchell wrote about Mary’s experience in a medical journal, calling it double consciousness, because she appeared to have two distinct forms of awareness within the same person. Her family kept detailed accounts of her behavior, noting that each time Mary changed from one state to the other, she behaved with the traits and memories of only that personality. This meant her original self did not know what the second one knew, and vice versa.
One notable aspect of Mary’s case was how her second personality was not just different in mood, but in skills and habits. In this state, she became more outgoing, often speaking confidently in social settings and showing a talent for music that her original self had never displayed. She also developed new routines, such as keeping a more meticulous household and taking an active interest in reading and correspondence, behaviors that contrasted sharply with her previously quiet and reserved nature.
Today’s understanding of DID is very different from how it was seen in the early 1800s. Modern psychologists link DID to severe trauma, especially in early childhood. Nearly all contemporary cases of DID involve some form of traumatic experience that the brain separates from conscious memory as a way of coping with overwhelming stress. This makes the condition complex and deeply rooted in emotional history. In Mary’s case, later historians suggest she may have experienced trauma related to her family’s early life before moving to America, which could have played a role in the way her mind later responded.
However, early 19th‑century doctors did not have the same tools or language that professionals use today. The idea of double consciousness emerged at a time when medical science was still struggling to understand the human mind. Some early observers interpreted cases like Mary’s through religious or mystical lenses, while others began to see them as clues to how the brain and consciousness might work in ways never before documented.
Mary’s alternating personalities eventually settled. Around her mid‑30s, her second state became more permanent. She lived the remainder of her life in this mode, leaving behind her earlier personality over time. She died in 1854 at about age 61, and the records of her unusual life remained a topic of study for decades.
While Mary Reynolds’s story may sound like something from a novel, it mattered to the development of psychology because it pushed doctors to recognize that human awareness and identity are not always simple or singular. Her case encouraged others to document similar experiences and, over time, helped shape how scientists think about dissociation, memory, and how the brain copes with intense emotional experiences.
Today, DID is recognized as a real clinical diagnosis by organisations like the American Psychiatric Association. It can be difficult to live with, and care from trained mental health professionals focuses on helping people integrate their experiences and manage the effects on daily life. Though Mary’s world was very different from ours, her experience remains an early chapter in the long effort to understand the complexity of identity and consciousness in the human mind.

The case began with Lawrence Robinson, a resident of California who was convicted under a state law that made it a criminal offense to be addicted to narcotics.
