In the health industry opioids such as morphine and oxycodone have been the most accessible and powerful tools for doctors treating severe pain. However the major drawback of this is the high risk of addiction and overdose, which have created the opioid crisis as a result. In response to this crisis scientists have developed safer alternatives to pain management. One of the newest and most promising of these developments is a drug called suzetrigine, its brand name being Journavx.
Suzetrigine is a newly approved prescription medication designed to treat moderate to severe acute pain, particularly after surgery or injury. In January 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it as the first drug in a completely new class of painkillers in over 20 years.Unlike traditional opioids, which act on receptors in the brain to dull the perception of pain and often trigger feelings of euphoria, suzetrigine operates through a fundamentally different mechanism.
It targets specific sodium channels, known as NaV1.8 channels, located in peripheral nerves. These channels play a crucial role in transmitting pain signals from the site of injury to the brain. By blocking these pathways, suzetrigine prevents pain signals from ever reaching the brain, rather than altering the brain’s response to them. This distinction is essential because it eliminates the activation of reward pathways that are responsible for addiction, making the drug a safer alternative for patients requiring short term pain relief.
The effectiveness of suzetrigine has been demonstrated in clinical trials, particularly for patients experiencing moderate to severe acute pain following surgical procedures. In these settings, the drug has shown pain relieving capabilities comparable to some opioid medications, offering a viable substitute without the associated risks of dependency or overdose. This makes it especially valuable in post-operative care, where managing pain is essential for recovery but must be balanced against the potential for long term harm. Additionally, because suzetrigine does not depress the central nervous system, it avoids dangerous side effects such as respiratory suppression, a leading cause of opioid related deaths.
Despite its promise, suzetrigine is not without limitations. Its current use is largely restricted to short-term, acute pain, and its effectiveness for chronic pain conditions remains uncertain. Chronic pain often involves more complex neurological processes that may not be fully addressed by blocking peripheral nerve signals alone. Furthermore, while the drug is considered safer than opioids, it can still produce mild side effects, including skin irritation and muscle discomfort. These factors indicate that while suzetrigine is a significant advancement, it is not a comprehensive solution to all pain management challenges.
Nevertheless, the development of suzetrigine signals an important transition in medical research and treatment strategies. It reflects a growing emphasis on targeting the biological origins of pain rather than relying on broad, system wide suppression of symptoms. As additional non-opioid medications are developed, this approach has the potential to transform how pain is treated, reducing dependence on opioids and mitigating the public health risks they pose.

Yet, the process of allocating these scarce resources raises profound ethical questions. With demand far exceeding supply, transplant waitlists force medical professionals, patients, and policymakers to navigate complex moral dilemmas surrounding fairness, and the value of life.
One of the central ethical principles in organ placement is justice, particularly in the justice that concerns the fair distribution of limited resources. Because there are far more patients in need than available organs, transplant centers must prioritize patients according to criteria such as urgency of need, likelihood of survival, and compatibility of the organ. For example, a patient with acute liver failure may be prioritized over someone with a chronic but stable condition. This system seeks to maximize the benefits of transplantation while minimizing waste, but it also raises questions about whether some patients are systematically disadvantaged due to factors such as geography, socioeconomic status, or access to healthcare.
Another ethical concern is autonomy of the patients to make informed decisions about their own care. Patients on transplant waitlists, already suffering from pain and instability of their health, must navigate difficult choices, including whether to accept high risk organs, participate in experimental procedures, or adhere to strict post-transplant regimens. Physicians are ethically obligated to provide clear, unbiased information so that patients can weigh the risks and benefits. Ensuring informed consent is crucial, especially in a system where patients may feel desperate or pressured due to the life or death stakes of organ allocation.
Transparency and accountability are also vital ethical considerations. Organ procurement and allocation policies must be publicly accessible and consistently applied to maintain trust in the system. Controversies arise when patients perceive unfair advantages, such as private networks or wealth influencing who receives an organ. To combat this, regulatory bodies like the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) in the United States implement standardized scoring systems and national oversight to promote equity.
Despite these safeguards, ethical dilemmas remain. For instance, should age or lifestyle factors influence prioritization? Some argue that younger patients should be prioritized because they have more potential life years, while others maintain that every life has equal intrinsic value. Similarly, behaviors that contribute to organ failure such as substance use or poor diet pose difficult questions about personal responsibility versus compassion and medical necessity. There is no universally accepted answer, highlighting the moral complexity of organ transplantation.
Overall, organ transplant waitlists are a crucible for medical ethics, balancing principles of justice, autonomy, beneficence, and transparency. While allocation systems strive to be fair and evidence based, they cannot entirely eliminate the moral tensions inherent in deciding who receives life saving treatment and who must wait. By continuously evaluating ethical frameworks, engaging the public in policy discussions, and applying consistent, transparent criteria, the medical community can navigate these challenges responsibly, ensuring that organ transplantation remains both a scientific achievement and a moral imperative.

While self expression and care are important, dermatologists and pediatricians are increasingly concerned about the physical and psychological consequences of this trend. From a medical standpoint, the rise in intensive skincare routines raises questions about skin health, product safety, and the impact on adolescents’ developing bodies.
One of the primary dermatological concerns is overuse of products. Many teens are layering multiple serums, toners, exfoliants, and masks daily, often without understanding the science behind them. Over-exfoliation, particularly with chemical exfoliants containing alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), can damage the skin’s protective barrier. This increases susceptibility to irritation, dryness, and even infections. Similarly, excessive use of retinoids or benzoyl peroxide commonly marketed as spot treatments can lead to redness, peeling, and long-term sensitivity if not supervised by a healthcare professional. From a dermatological perspective, a simpler, gentle routine is often safer and more effective, especially for teenage skin, which is naturally prone to oiliness and hormonal fluctuations.
Another concern is the early use of makeup. Many teens are experimenting with foundation, concealer, and heavy makeup before fully understanding proper hygiene. Shared applicators such as brushes or beauty blenders, infrequent cleansing, and prolonged wear can contribute to clogged pores, bacterial infections, and worsening acne. Dermatologists emphasize the importance of using non-comedogenic products, washing brushes regularly, and removing makeup before sleep. Failing to adhere to these basic principles can have lasting consequences for young skin.
The obsession with appearance also has psychological implications. Teens are exposed to constant messaging that flawless skin equates to social acceptance or personal value. This can exacerbate body image issues, anxiety, and low self esteem, particularly when social media platforms amplify unrealistic beauty standards. While dermatologists are trained to address physical concerns, pediatricians and mental health professionals must work alongside families to ensure that skincare and makeup use does not become a source of stress or harmful comparison.
Despite these concerns, not all trends are harmful. Skincare education can be essential to teaching teens to protect their skin with sunscreen, hydration, and gentle cleansing. These habits, if introduced responsibly, can foster a lifelong routine of healthy skin maintenance. The key lies in moderation, supervision, and critical evaluation of products marketed to an impressionable audience. Parents and healthcare providers can help teens distinguish science backed skincare from cosmetic marketing hype and if accessible and affordable, using a dermatologist is the best and most effective way to combat any skin troubles .

Birth control often mistakenly gets reduced to one idea: preventing pregnancy. While that’s technically true, it misses most of the long term effects that will occur as a result. Hormonal contraception, especially, works by reshaping the body’s natural cycle in ways that go far beyond ovulation. For many teens, birth control is a way to help manage periods, erratic hormones, and even deteriorating mental health.
Most hormonal birth control methods, like the pill, patch, or hormonal IUD, rely on synthetic versions of estrogen and progesterone. These hormones suppress ovulation, meaning the ovaries do not release an egg. At the same time, the lining of the uterus stays thinner, and cervical mucus thickens which makes it harder for sperm to reach anything at all.
One of the most noticeable effects shows up in the menstrual cycle. Periods often become lighter, shorter, and more predictable. For some, they almost disappear. That can be a huge relief for some, especially in cases of heavy bleeding or severe cramps. Conditions like endometriosis, or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are sometimes managed with hormonal birth control because of the controlled cycle. Still, the “period” on many pills is not a natural one, it’s a withdrawal bleed triggered by a break in hormones.
Skin changes are another common reason people start birth control. Certain pills reduce androgens, which are the hormones that contribute to acne. As a result, skin can clear significantly over a few months. However, not all types have this effect. Some may even worsen breakouts depending on how the body reacts to the hormone balance.
Weight gain is often blamed on birth control, but the evidence is mixed. Most studies suggest that significant weight gain is not directly caused by the pill itself. That said, some people notice changes in appetite, water retention, or body composition. The experience varies a lot, which is why the effects of one method might feel completely different for one compared to another individual.
Mood is where things get more complicated. Hormones influence brain chemistry, so shifts can affect emotions, focus, and energy levels. Some report feeling more stable, especially if their mood swings were tied to their cycle. Others experience increased anxiety, irritability, or depressive symptoms. There’s no universal pattern, which makes it harder to predict how someone will respond before starting.
There are also physical side effects that tend to show up early and then fade. Nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, and spotting between periods are all common in the first few months. The body usually adjusts, but not always. If side effects persist, switching methods often solves the problem.
Long-term safety is another issue to keep in mind. For most healthy teens, hormonal birth control is considered safe. There are benefits that go beyond convenience, including reduced risk of ovarian and endometrial cancers. At the same time, there are small risks, like blood clots, especially with estrogen-containing methods. These risks are still low, but they are part of why one’s medical history matters before starting any form.
Non-hormonal options, like the copper IUD, work differently. Instead of changing hormone levels, copper creates an environment that is toxic to sperm. This avoids hormone-related side effects but can also lead to heavier or more painful periods, especially at first.
What stands out across all of this is how individual the experience is. Two people can take the same pill and have completely different outcomes. That unpredictability is often what makes the process frustrating. Finding the right method can take time and trial and error.
Birth control is often framed as a simple solution, but it’s important to note that in reality, that’s not the case . It can regulate, suppress, improve, or disrupt, depending on the body using it. Understanding those layers makes it easier to see why conversations around it are rarely straightforward.

Pregnancy tends to collect myths the same way a rumor spreads through a hallway. Some of these ideas sound convincing because they have been repeated for years, but many do not hold up when examined closely. Clearing up these misconceptions helps separate cultural beliefs from actual medical understanding.
One common myth is that pregnancy always comes with obvious symptoms right away. In reality, symptoms can be subtle or delayed. Some individuals experience fatigue, mild nausea, or no noticeable changes at all in the early stages. Pregnancy does not follow a single pattern, which makes early detection less predictable than it is often portrayed.
Another widespread belief is that the shape or position of the abdomen can reveal the baby’s sex. This idea has no scientific basis. The way a body carries a pregnancy depends on muscle tone, body structure, and the baby’s position, not on whether the fetus is male or female. Despite how often this claim circulates, it remains a myth with no reliable evidence behind it.
There is also a misconception that pregnancy prevents all forms of physical activity. In truth, moderate exercise is often recommended in many pregnancies, as long as there are no medical complications. Activities such as walking or gentle stretching can support circulation and overall well-being. The idea that pregnancy requires complete rest is outdated and not supported by current medical guidance.
A fourth myth suggests that cravings indicate nutritional deficiencies. While cravings are common, they do not necessarily reflect what the body is lacking. Hormonal changes influence taste and appetite, which explains why certain foods suddenly become more appealing. Cravings are more closely tied to shifting hormones than to any specific nutrient shortage.
Another belief is that pregnant individuals should “eat for two.” This phrase is misleading. Nutritional needs do increase, but not to the extent of doubling food intake. Overeating can lead to unnecessary weight gain, while balanced meals support both the pregnant individual and the developing fetus. The focus is on quality of nutrition rather than quantity.
A sixth myth claims that morning sickness only happens in the morning. In reality, nausea can occur at any time of day. For some, it lasts for a few weeks, while others experience it for a longer period. The term “morning sickness” simplifies a much more complex and varied experience.
There is also a belief that stress during pregnancy always harms the baby. While extreme or prolonged stress can have effects, everyday stress does not automatically lead to harm. The body has mechanisms that help buffer short-term stress. The relationship between stress and pregnancy outcomes is more nuanced than this myth suggests.
Another misconception is that certain physical activities, such as lifting arms overhead or reaching, can harm the fetus. The fetus is well protected within the uterus, surrounded by amniotic fluid and the uterine wall. Normal movements and daily activities do not pose the risks that this myth implies.
A ninth myth claims that spicy food can trigger labor. Spicy meals may cause discomfort or indigestion, but they do not initiate labor. Labor begins through complex hormonal and physical signals, not through specific foods. This belief persists largely due to coincidence rather than cause and effect.
Finally, there is the idea that pregnancy always lasts exactly nine months. In practice, a full-term pregnancy is closer to 40 weeks, and delivery can occur slightly before or after that point. The timeline is not rigid, and variation is completely normal.
These myths continue to circulate because they are simple and easy to remember. Real pregnancy, however, is far less predictable and far more individual. Understanding what is fact and what is fiction helps create a clearer and more accurate picture of the experience, especially in discussions where misinformation can easily take root.

Long before narcolepsy was understood as a neurological condition, it appeared in medical notes as something confusing and inconsistent. One of the earliest and most important case descriptions comes from Jean-Baptiste Édouard Gélineau, who observed a patient with a pattern of sudden sleep attacks that did not fit any known diagnosis at the time. This case is often considered the starting point for how narcolepsy is understood today.
Gélineau’s patient did not just feel tired. The individual experienced abrupt episodes of falling asleep during the day, sometimes in situations where staying awake would normally be expected. These episodes were not gradual or predictable. Instead, they appeared suddenly and without warning. In some cases, the patient would fall asleep while sitting upright or even during active moments, which made the condition especially noticeable to observers.
What made this case stand out even more was the presence of what is now called cataplexy. The patient experienced sudden loss of muscle control, often triggered by emotional reactions such as laughter or excitement. This did not affect consciousness, but it caused the body to weaken or collapse briefly. At the time, this connection between emotion and physical response was not well understood, and it added to the confusion surrounding the condition.
Gélineau described the disorder using the term “narcolepsy,” which comes from Greek roots meaning “numbness” and “seizure.” The name itself reflects how the condition was perceived early on, as something that affected both awareness and physical control. His case study helped distinguish narcolepsy from other conditions like epilepsy, which can also involve sudden physical changes but follows a different neurological pattern.
The importance of this patient lies not just in the symptoms, but in how carefully they were recorded. Gélineau documented the frequency, triggers, and effects of the sleep attacks, creating one of the first structured descriptions of the disorder. This level of detail allowed other physicians to recognize similar patterns in their own patients, gradually building a clearer picture of narcolepsy as a distinct medical condition.

Gélineau’s patient was one of the first to show that these symptoms followed a recognizable pattern, even if the cause was not yet known. The case Concerned Pastors for Social Action v. Khouri sits within the larger legal fallout from the Flint water crisis in Flint, Michigan. Even though Concerned Pastors for Social Action v. Khouri is not always the most publicly discussed case from the Flint crisis, its procedural outcome matters. It helped establish that lawsuits against government agencies can move forward when there is evidence of negligence, and that early dismissal is not guaranteed when public health is at stake.
The result is less about a single final verdict and more about what the court allowed to happen. By permitting the case to continue, the court opened the door for accountability, settlements, and a wider recognition of how environmental failures translate into legal responsibility.
